FAQ

Here are some of the more commonly asked questions. Also included are basic descriptions of bodywork modalities that I utilize. If you have a question that isn't answered here, please feel free to contact me anytime.

Usually people prefer to undress to whatever level is comfortable for them. Most people like to leave on their underwear but you'll be properly draped the entire time, ensuring that your modesty is protected. Sometimes a client will keep all clothes on. This is fine although I'll be skipping the massage oil. If that is the case, wear something very comfortable & easy to move in.

After setting up, I'll step out of the room to wash my hands and give you privacy to undress and get settled on the massage table.

Since most people undress to some degree for the massage, you'll be under a sheet or sheet & blanket. I uncover only the area to be worked on, tucking in the drape so you feel secure. Then I cover up that part before moving on.

Clothing impedes the effectiveness of Swedish, Deep Tissue and Myofascial Release. With clothing off, I can more easily identify injuries or compromised skin. I'm able to do SCS, MET, and some Swedish while giving you a relaxing experience if you would rather not undress.

No! If anything feels uncomfortable, tell me right away. Pain is the signal that something is wrong. An area may be painful before we begin (which is why you've scheduled me, right?) but will feel good to have it manipulated. If it is too painful to touch, I will modify the session to accommodate the affected area. Everyone's pain tolerance is different and that's why your feedback is so important.

Technically, this is called the hedonic level and refers to the amount of pressure that feels right for you. The muscles may feel sore but it feels good to have them manipulated. Everyone's comfort level is different, so let me know if you'd like more pressure or a lighter touch.

No! Having any kind of systemic infection is an absolute contraindication. This includes cold, flu, fever and all respiratory infections. Talk to me if you feel unsure or have more questions.

It really depends. Massage therapy can be modified to accommodate many different challenges, including some types of cancer. Contact me to discuss your situation. Depending on your circumstances, you may need your doctor's approval before we can schedule.

First of all, congratulations! For your and your baby's safety, you must be into your 2nd trimester and having a healthy pregnancy.

If you've recently had a vaccination of any kind, wait a few days for your immune system to fully recover before having a massage.

If you need to stop the massage for any reason, just let me know.

Description of Bodywork Modalities

Swedish massage:

Relaxes the body by primarily using gliding techniques, working in the direction of the heart. Swedish helps to decrease blood pressure, increases oxygenation of the addressed areas and helps improve blood and lymphatic circulation. This type of massage is what most people refer to as classic or regular massage.

Deep Tissue:

Uses firm pressure and slow strokes to reach deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. These techniques help to release muscles affected by chronic injury or repetitive movements.

Myofascial Release:

Applies sustained pressure on targeted areas of connective tissue (fascia) that surround your muscles & bones. The objective is to release constriction in the connective tissue in order to achieve greater range of motion and less pain. The pressure is usually light. You may be coached to do some small movements to help the release and to create new habits to encourage proper muscle and joint recruitment. No oil or lotion is used for these techniques.

SCS:

Strain Counter-strain is a manual therapy that is extremely gentle and non-invasive for alleviating painful and/or chronically tight areas. Sometimes referred to as Positional Therapy, the practitioner adjusts the recipient into various positions and holds there for about 90 seconds. This creates a neurological reset, bringing the targeted muscle back to its more optimal length. Having the muscle in its better length promotes better circulation, healing, less pain and improved movement.

MET:

In a nutshell, MET (Muscle Energy Techniques) is a type of assisted stretching. It utilizes the muscles own working load to induce relaxation, reduce pain and to promote better range of motion. After careful positioning, you will be asked to participate by slightly contracting the targeted muscle or giving resistance against a movement done by the therapist. This will be followed by a stretch to lengthen the same or opposite muscle group.
